C'est Paris: Historic-Architectural Discovery

February 1, 2011

For those of you interested in historical architectures, the churches in Paris may offer some interest.

A few weeks ago, I took the opportunity to visit the Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral ("Our Lady of Paris Cathedral" in French). I for one am not a Christian so the purpose of my visit was more out of interest in its history and architecture rather than its religious aspects (although religious history, particularly the Christian-Islamic relation and their influence culturally, socially and politically on one another is quite interesting as well!).
 the Notre-Dame Cathedral

Huge historical buildings have always had a magical grasp on me, rending me speechless and in awe of their sheer magnificence and beauty - and to think, so many events and people have taken place and walked on the very same floor you walk upon in the cathedral... Kinda amazing, huh?

I find the Notre Dame to be a very beautiful building: massive high ceilings, extensively decorated walls and huge stained glass decorations on the window panes. The stained glass works were amazing (I say this because I love stained glass... When I was younger, I took a stained-glass after school activity and learnt how they were created! It was amazing!)

For the Catholics out there, Notre Dame is currently the cathedral of the Catholic Archdiocese of Paris - the official chair of the Archbishop of Paris, who at the moment is André Vingt-Trois (André 23rd).

and to think back then all these statues were carved and designed by hand??
The Cathedral is widely considered to be the finest examples of French Gothic architecture in France and all over Europe. The cathedral is even home to some popular childhood stories of our past such as: the Hunchback of Notre-Dame.

It is also from this cathedral that you can also visit Paris' Crypt of the Parvis of Notre Dame (link) or climb up high to the towers - the infamous home of Quasimodo (link)
